Laak and Eslami beat Polaris Poker Bot

July 26, 2007

The first ever Man v Machine Championship has been won by … Man.

The much blogged and reported poker event between two poker pro’s Phil “unabomber” Laak and Ali Eslami against Polaris the pokerbot has resulted in a victory for the pro’s.

In fairness to the bot it would have robbed any job average rec poker player clean of their bankroll - and it seems more a testament to Laak and Eslami’s skills that they won.

The pokerbot seemed to hold it’s own for the most part and it’s an interesting experiment in Artificial Intelligence. Polaris has proved a machine / computer can be trained or learn all the subtle poker tricks of effective bluffing and capable of playing an above average game as it’s not like the pro’s beat it in every session or even close.

As the whole thing has been blogged, re blogged, reported and re reported it’s better that you get all the info from the horses mouth - which is at PokerAcademy.com & The University of Alberta …

boffins stuff … University of Alberta Boffins Build Polaris the Poker Bot

Will Poliaris the pokerbot change the face of online poker ? Maybe

The massive amount of cruddy spamtastic “buy this bot and win while you sleep” stuff is mostly just a scam to empty your wallet. It’s a myth that there are 1000’s of bots online but maybe a bot this good will change the face of online poker - who knows.

Best Poker Bonus Hunting Guide

July 26, 2007

Online poker room’s all offer a poker bonus of some sort or another as an incentive for players to sign-up and play for real money at their site.

It might be a 100% 1st deposit bonus, regular re-load bonuses, an instant poker bonus or a 30% rakeback deal - Some will have easy raked hand requirements or collecting players points and others will be stricter releasing the bonus if it’s cleared within a fixed time or in one lump rather than in $10 chucks.

They’re all different but one thing they all have in common is the poker sites don’t give away free poker money for nothing - Bonuses are good to clear but don’t chase a poker bonus for the sake of it …

High Stakes Poker Running it Twice

July 26, 2007

For some High Stakes Poker on TV is as interesting as watching paint dry.

But as I now play more ring games online than SnG’s and our home game has always been strictly a cash game - I really enjoy watching the big guns battle it out on High Stakes Poker.

Any time Daniel Negreanu is at the table it’s makes for entertaining viewing. Especially when players agree to run the hand twice … Dealing the turn and river twice giving the underdog a sporting chance to either catch up and split the pot or for one or other player to take the pot 2-0.

Running it twice is really the domain of the gambler, but bearing in mind some of the best poker players simply cannot resist crazy proposition bets “run it twice” makes alot more sense than betting on the colour of the dealers underwear.

At another HSP sesson Daniel ran a hand twice with Deeb and hit his straight second time around to split the pot. He didn’t get so lucky in this hand against Eli Elezra hitting his ace on the turn (to split) only for Eli to make his hand on the river making it 2-0 to Elezra.
