How not to play aces against 72
May 26, 2008
This classic poker video is from the WSOP 2006 $15,000 pot limit event. With a hand between Rafe Furst picking up pocket aces and Can Kim Hau who gets to limp in with the worst starting hand in poker … 72 off. Furst illustrating how not to play pocket aces allowing other players to limp in to see the flop. Unluckily the flop comes 77Q taking the worst hand to best but at the end of the day a crucial error in reading the table from Furst enabled this to happen … even if your trying to slow play aces and predicting some action it’s always worth putting in some kind of raise to at least reduce the range of calling hands.
Going on to flat call the flop when Hau bets straight out with his trips again doesn’t really get Furst anymore information on how much trouble he may be in. The 3 on the turn helps no-ones hand but enables Hau to check expecting a bet from Furst. Interestingly Furst bets and Hau re-raises all-in and Furst calls … Bear in mind that at this point Furst is very much behind and Hau very much ahead. So when the river finds and ace Furst effectively got out of hot water with a 5% chance coming off … so while alot of players would think this was justice in reality when all the money went in … Furst’s pocket aces were very much behind.
