27 left in WSOP 2008 Main Event
July 14, 2008
The WSOP $10,000 No-Limit Hold’em World Championship started on July 3rd with 6,844 players (with the second largest number of WSOP entries in history). After ten days only 79 players remained, fighting it out for the most important poker bracelet and over $9 million in first place prize money.

The big news of the World Series of Poker 2008 is the planned delay of 4 months between the main part of the poker tournament and the playing of the final table (last 9 players) which is planned to be played in November. It’s turned into somthing of a hot potato with obviously the marketing machine seeing it as a great opportunity to promote the game, the WSOP and for jo public to indentify with the final nine players turning them either from no name players into would be super sport stars or to increase the cult of pro poker players whould they make it to the final table … this years final 27 doesnt seem to hold much promise on the latter front with all of the household name poker pro’s noticable by their absence.
Whether with hindsight this move will turn out to be a stroke of marketing genius elevating poker truely into the mainstream of specatator sports or a flawed decision ruining the flow of the tournament will remain to be seen … I guess thats a post for November.
Interestingly the poker pro’s are divided on this with Jonny Chan, Jennifer Harman & Daniel Negreanu coming out in favour of the idea.

Greg Raymer and Doyle Brunson both previous WSOP main event winners remain on the fence both seeing pro’s and con’s of the idea.
While Mike “the mouth” Matusow has come out openly against the idea viewing the break in the flow of the game as counter to the whole point of the WSOP tournament and also views it an unneccessary stress a player could suffer knowing they have made the final table but not being able to stay focussed on the game with a break.

The most crucial factor seems to be the value of the ESPN and other media coverage which may or may not get generated with a 4 month gap … If it works and puts poker up into the big league of spectator sports then I think we can expect higher and higher entries to poker tournaments. In the same way that Chris Moneymaker winning the WSOP in 2003 encouraged a whole new generation of poker players both online and live this could bring poker truely into the main stream. Or it could backfire disaffecting the existing player base either way its a brave approach for the WSOP to try something new and maybe it’s the right time to try something new. Undoubtedlly ts going to be different and make players approach the main event with a different strategy, but making the bulk of the main event more like a satellite to the final table SNG might well be a postive thing, only time will tell … Roll on November 9th.
