Top 10 New Years Resolutions for Poker Players

January 6, 2009

Jumping on the bandwagon of making New Years Resolutions for 2009 I thought I would make a top 10 list of New Years resolutions that all poker players should be making and sticking to …

1. Bankroll Management - Simply stop playing in cash games too big for your bankroll and SNG’s and MTT’s where they buy-in puts a big dent in your bankroll, this is the single biggest hole in most players game.

2. Play Happy - Only play when your really up for it, dont feel you need to chase loses or squeeze in a game, if you feel rough when there is “once in a lifetime” tournament running, skip it as your unlikely to play your best and would be wasting cash trying.

3. Dont Go on Tilt - Ignore the chattbox or turn it off it you cant, abusive or irritating chat that could tilt you is soemthing you must learn to tune out or turn it off.

4. Make Player Notes - Know your enemy, understand their weaknesses and strengths and you will find you will make fewer mistakes and make more profit.

5. Read More Poker Strategy - Vital to improving as a player, the more you read the more you learn and the better you will get.

6. Know When Your Beat - Dont fall in love with the bottom end of a straight or your two low suited cards when its clear the other player has probably made the top end of the straight or has you beat with a single higher suited card. If the board has killed you dont through good money after bad.

7. Be More Decisive - Unless your planning to trap or know another player will raise agressively for you, try to be more decisive, raising or folding rather than limping / calling when you can see you have little chance of catching up.

8. Know when to Quit - Dont stick in a game if its going badly through pride or stupidity, if your on tilt, tired or distracted then leave the poker for another time.

9. Plan Ahead - Spend more time in the poker room lobby, study % to the flop rates, cash played at the table & your player notes. When sitting down at a table look at players and there chip stacks before deciding where to sit down at a cash table and choose to sit with the big money and manaics acting before you and the tight players after you.

10. Keep Respecting Your Bankroll - Dont expect to win every tournament, SNG or every session at the cash table, therefore dont commit too much of your bankroll to a single session or game.

My general personal top 10 new years resolutions and those of our other other forum members are in the 4kingpoker poker forum, mainly for 2009 I am aiming to keep my cash game playing profitable and more consistent, while playing more MTT’s for fun, a challenge and maybe go for some of the bigger live game satellites … WSOP 2009 he I come (maybe)

Up until 5 minutes before Big Ben struck 12 to bring in the New Year, I was desperately putting a second coat of paint on the bathroom walls, ready for me and the plumber to get nearer to finishing our bathroom on new years day. So I’ve only just got to thinking about my New Years resolutions … (resolution no.11 - don’t start DIY projects over Christmas or New Year)

One of the most important things with resolutions is to keep them, you can make all the promises in world but if they only last a week - It was pointless making them in the first place.

BTW I am not Gus the Canadianstudmuffin guy in the video above, I just thought he was funny. While we are on funny sites - check out my mates celebrity humour site at dearcelebritylovefrom.com

Good Luck and here’s to a profitable 2009 for all our poker playing friends.
